Several years ago, the tide of big box stores swept across the country, led by Wal-Mart, the largest retail company in the world. In 1995, the tide reached Guelph, and stopped. While a few of the smaller boxes have found their way here, having moved into properly zoned areas, Guelph is the only community of its size in Ontario without a Wal-Mart.
