Making a boulevard garden using the sheet mulch method -
with Megan Gruner of The Natural Path Gardens
1. Use a lawn edger to dig a narrow trench around the edge of the boulevard. This will make it easier to anchor newspapers. The pieces of sod can be piled on the center of the boulevard and covered over with newspaper. They will break down along with the rest of the grass.
2. Place layers of newspapers (about 6 to 10 sheets thick) right on top of the grass. Soak the newspapers in a wheelbarrow filled with water before laying them on the grass. This will help anchor them while you're working. Or water them after they're on the ground. Either way, make sure they're wet!
3. Make sure the newspapers overlap so that no light gets through. Otherwise grass will grow through. Then spread about 3 to 6 inches of mulch on top of the newspaper layers. Straw is being used here, but wood chips, leaves or even soil mix can be used.
